I joined Hilti in 2015 and started in the position of Key Project Engineer. Spending 80% of my time on the field with customers gave me some great insights into our customers’ business. It also enabled me to understand the Hilti business and operating model. This knowledge empowered me to provide unique and value-added Hilti solutions. Being in this customer-facing role opened more doors and opportunities too. I was then tasked to work on a Trade Strategy project for Hilti Marketing Organisation in Southeast Asia. I’m now an Account Manager, and this structured move and development further built my skillsets.
Regularly, I discuss my challenges and career aspirations with my mentor, the general manager, who encourages me to think outside the box and leads me in the right direction. The best part about Hilti are the people – the Hilti culture is spread across countries and continents. Change is a constant, however with our innovative thinking, learning agility and adaptability, no challenges are too difficult to be overcome. Expectations to excel and outperform are high too, but so are the rewards.
My first role on the Outperformer program was in sales, which I was quite nervous about. I soon learned that it’s basically a case of relationship management. You’re going out and meeting people, selling and advising on our products. You also get lots of support from your team, be it other sales people on the road or the customer service guys in head office. So, far from being scary, it’s really quite fun. Especially when you make your first sale. What a buzz!
What I’m most excited about is the opportunity to work abroad. While other companies don’t let you do this, or they make it very difficult, Hilti genuinely want you to experience working and living in different countries.
A university event in Hong Kong led me to fall in love with the leaders at Hilti before I even knew about the firm. The unique culture of Hilti, with its almost flat organizational structure and the emphasis placed on employee development were the reasons behind me joining Hilti almost 2 years ago, and I have not looked back since!
In a short span of time, I have done B2B Sales, Product Marketing and Finance. In addition to the functional knowledge that these experiences have given me, they have strengthened me as a person and I’ve grown by leaps and bounds. Doing sales in an industry I’ve never had exposure to before, in addition to the language barrier, was a challenge at first. But it turned out to be enjoyable as well as great experience and is valuable in every project I take up.
Being in the Outperformer program truly was a privilege and an excellent opportunity to give your career at Hilti a head start. The exceptional amount of coaching and mentoring from senior management makes me see clearly where I want to be in 10 years and how to get there. And now I enjoy a leadership position as Area Sales Manager!
