My first role with Hilti was a lab-based project, creating a masonry manual for UK-specific anchors. While it involved some technical analysis, it was a largely practical project that introduced me to new skills like bricklaying – right from day one. For me, this made a refreshing change from what I’d done before, which had been mostly theoretical.
My next project involved measuring the human effect of vibration by Hilti tools. To start with, I headed to Germany to become third-party certified. I then spent much of my time traveling the UK, working in laboratories and on site with our customers. The result was a vibration product manual that applies to health and safety in construction - and that Hilti uses today.
After this, I moved to head office as a mechanical and electrical design engineer, using software to design structures and calculate installations, before taking on a field-based role as project engineer. This job meant supporting design offices in my region to see that Hilti-engineered products were specified on their projects. I dealt with engineers, architects and clients to consult on solutions, and delivered training seminars to educate our customers.
In 2016, I was promoted to my current role, which is senior engineer with a focus on firestops. After training in Kaufering, I traveled northern Europe to work on various fire testing jobs. I now create tailored engineering judgements for different projects, while visiting customer sites, giving seminars and running training sessions for my colleagues.
My project list to date is satisfyingly long. It includes commercial developments, nuclear power stations, airports, universities, warships, stadiums, railways…I could go on! A working day at Hilti varies hugely and I feel proud when I see Hilti products that I specified on a completed project.
With Hilti’s constant innovation and introduction of new products, learning and training don’t ever stop. It means plenty of opportunity for the next role or project - and it means I’m never bored.
